Since “Phnom” is Khmer meaning “hill,” the hill that serves as the namesake for Penh also took on the name of the city’s founder. From 1432 to 1505, Phnom Penh served as the seat of the Khmer monarchy. Due to civil war among the pretenders to the throne, it lay fallow for the next 360 years, from 1505 to 1865. Later monarchs established their capitals in Pursat, Longvek, Lavear Em, and Oudong in addition to Tuol Basan (Srey Santhor).

Tonle Sap Lake

Tonle Sap, also known as the “Great Lake”, is a combined lake and river system of significant importance to Cambodia. It is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia and is an ecological hotspot designated as a UNESCO biosphere in 1997. Tonle Sap is located in the northwest of Cambodia. The lake is connected to the Mekong River by a short river also named Tonle Sap Lake.

Tonle Sap is the best place for Ecology and Biodiversity. The lake is home to a diverse array of species with over 200 varieties of fish, as well as various bird species, making it one of the most productive inland fisheries worldwide. It supports over three million people, providing over 75% of Cambodia’s annual inland fish catch and 60% of the Cambodians protein intake. During the rainy season in the region, the lake’s size increases remarkably, flooding nearby fields and forests, resulting in a rich biodiversity. The area houses a high number of species, from over 100 varieties of water birds to various types of snakes, tortoises, and otters, among others.

The Tonle Sap is central to many local livelihoods in Cambodia. It is a critical water source for agriculture – particularly for rice production and the fishing industry. Every year, the lake delivers thousands of tonnes of fish, which support the commercial freshwater catch of Cambodia. Human settlements dotted around its banks largely rely on the lake for their water supply, agriculture, and livelihoods. The largest settlement on its shores, Siem Reap, is the gateway to Angkor, the ancient capital of the Khmer empire.

The future of Tonle Sap’s ecosystem is at risk due to environmental stressors such as deforestation, overfishing, and hydroelectric projects. Several programs have been initiated by the Cambodian Government, in collaboration with international organizations, to safeguard Tonle Sap. The challenge is to balance environmental conservation with the economic growth and livelihoods of local communities. The Tonle Sap is more than just a lake; it’s a lifeline for millions of people and a source of uniqueness in the earth’s biodiversity. Ongoing efforts for its preservation are critical to the future of this remarkable body of water.
