Apsara Show

The Apsara Dance is a classic form of art deeply embedded in Cambodia’s culture and an iconic symbol that’s recognized worldwide. The graceful movements and ethereal beauty of the performers embody the timeless and rich heritage of Cambodia. The Apsara Dance is not just a form of entertainment. It serves as a bridge connecting the present with the past, reminding modern Cambodians of their ancient, rich cultural heritage. The dance also plays significant roles in royal events, religious festivals, and is a symbol of Cambodia for tourists worldwide.

Derived from ancient Khmer culture, the Apsara Dance is inspired by the celestial dancers or “Apsaras” depicted on the walls of Angkor Wat. Women portrayed in these enchanting bas-reliefs on the Angkor temples were incredibly beautiful and seductive, often shown dancing. The artform was gleaned from these sources and refined in the 20th century by Princess Norodom Bopha Devi, a royal ballet dancer, turning it into a stylized narrative ballet. Each performance showcases tales from the Reamker, the Khmer version of the Indian epic, Ramayana. Dancers embody various mythological characters – gods, goddesses, and mythical creatures. Its language lies in the mesmerizing hand gestures, or “mudras,” used to convey emotions or tell stories – with each movement having distinct symbolism.
